CURRENT HOMEWORK:

  • Evaluate our current design through one of the lenses. Find at least two areas where our design is successful, and two areas that we could refine to be better.

PAST HOMEWORK:

  • brainstorm a task / tasks to impart on students for starting the telescope design inquiry
  • anymore goals for the telescope design inquiry? what do we want the students to gain from it?

This needs to get updated since the PDP.

Inquiry #1: Color and Light Inquiry (led by Heather)

  • Goals: CLgoals.pdf
  • 3 Stations:
    • Overhead and color filters
    • Projectors and colored light
    • Ray boxes and dichroic filters
  • Timeline: 270 min (4.5 hours) - Total
  • Facilitators:
    • Stations: Sonnet, Betsy, John

Inquiry #2: Lenses and mirrors (led by Sonnett)

  • goals: LMgoals.rtf
  • goal for us: to make the stations awesome (engaging)!
  • have questions generated by individuals
  • multiple stations
    • allows better ownership, less cheating, and more in-depth & focused knowledge)
    • better for time constraints
  • station ideas:
    • three-corner mirror (a bit complex; took somewhat heavy facilitating before)
    • ray boxes with different prisms & mirrors (understanding ray diagrams)
      • can also serve as a thinking tool when one group observes another
    • critical angle w/ lasers and plexi-glass shapes
  • steer clear of virtual image concept -- have something prepared to tell students if it comes up?
  • scheduling: generating questions, question sorting, stations, presentation, synthesis...
    • explore different presentation formats (posters, chalk/whiteboard, slides, notecards, etc.)?
    • posters may be good written references for the telescope design later

The design phase for the 2008 Akamai Observatory Short Course has started ... So far, our design team includes Emily, Lisa, Lynne, Sarah, Greg, Mike, Nino, Scott and David. Emily, Greg, Mike and Nino are active participants of the CfAO? Professional Development Program and this short course is their teaching lab.
