ViLLaGEs = Visible Light Adaptive Optics Experiments

Concept: Build a prototype MEMS Adaptive Optics system and test on the sky. The objectives are to test 1) MEMS capability/robustness as deformable mirrors in the harsh telescope/dome environment 2) MEMS usefulness as an open loop controller (e.g. suitable for MOAO), 3) Uplink laser correction to produce a small LGS spot, and 4) If sufficient LGS signal, closed the loop operation on the sharpened laser guide star. These experiments will act as a technology pathfinder for future visible wavelength AO systems on large telescopes.

Villages is supported by the National Science Foundation through the Small Grants for Exploratory Research (SGER) program, the University of California/Lick Observatory, and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation through its grant for the Laboratory for Adaptive Optics.
